America's First Teen Pop Princess Was Queer

The home for Songs That Saved Your Life Radio on WKNY 107.9FM where Jami explores the very queer roots of rock n roll and plays a lot of great music!

Long before Ariana Grande, Debbie Gibson, or Miley Cyrus, there was Lelsey Gore. And before she eventually became a queer icon, she forged her fame as a 16 year old pop sensation in 1963, branded as an innocent, boy crazy girl next door. Her songs were mostly about the heartbreak of teenage crushes with songs like "It's My Party" and the messy revenge song, "Judy's Turn to Cry"

Gore would soon have a hit with the feminist anthem "You Don’t Own Me" and, not only would the song change the course of her life, it would become a rite of passage for other queer artists in her wake.

Tune in to hear the story of America’s first queer teen pop princess.

Music in today’s episode includes songs from The Ronettes, Dusty Springfield, Eartha Kitt, The Supremes, Nancy Sinatra, Chappell Roan, Hayley Kiyoko, and many more.
